Things to do in Silvassa

Silvassa got its name from ‘Silva’ which means ‘Woods’ in Portuguese. More than 50% of the area is covered with thick forest which creates a natural habitat for different kinds of birds and animals. Silvassa is covered with lush forests with tall trees, Meanderings Rivers, large waterfronts, waterfalls, streams and hills.

Silvassa now capital of Dadra and Nagar Haveli now, in Western India, was once ruled by the Marathas till 1779. The 72 villages it comprises were offered to the Portuguese following a friendship treaty. Portuguese rule over the Union Territory lasted until August 2, 1954, and traces of it can still be found.

In 1961, Dadra and Nagar Haveli became a part of India and since then, it has been administered as a Union Territory, with Silvassa as its’ capital. The Union Territory is dotted with ruins from its glorious past. Vapi is the nearest railway station which is around 18 km away.

Roman Catholic Church

Roman Catholic Church also known as The Church of Our Lady of Piety was built by the Portuguese’s in 1th century. The oldest and stunning structure currently present in Silvassa. There are many churches in Silvassa due to Portuguese settlement for many years.

Silvassa Museum

The Silvassa Museum has a collection of old weaponry, masks, costumes, instruments and more which represents Silvassa heritage very well. Silvassa is home to many tribes, the Tribal Museum at Silvassa is a tribute and an effort to safeguard and depict the rich legacy of tribal culture and society in its untouched form.

Lion Safari

Lion Safari Park occupies around 25 hectors which around 90 kms away from Dadar& Nagar Haveli. The Lion Safari Park is an effort and mission of the government to provide home for Asiatic Lions in their natural habitat.

VanGanga Lake Garden

VanGanga Lake Garden is a well maintained park with jogging tracks, greenery, Japanese style wooden bridges and huts. It is located just 5 kms away from Silvassa city.

Madhuban Dam & Water Sports

Madhuban Dam on the downstream side of river Damanganga, a large water front has formed near Dudhani (40 Kms from Silvassa). For adventure loving tourists, the department provides water scooters, acquabikes, bumper boats, speed boats, kayaks, canoes and passenger boats at the Water Sports Centre, Dudhani.
