Near field communication (NFC)
is a set of standards for smartphones and similar devices to establish radio
communication with each other by touching them together or bringing them into
close proximity, usually no more than a few centimeters. Present and
anticipated applications include contactless transactions, data exchange, and
simplified setup of more complex communications such as Wi-Fi. Communication is
also possible between an NFC device and an unpowered NFC chip, called a
"tag".
NFC devices
communicate in two different modes; active and passive mode. An
active device generates its own RF field whereas a passive device uses inductive
coupling to communicate. Induction occurs in a passive device when a wire or
any other conductor of electricity passes through a magnetic field (active
device’s field), generating an electric current in the wire.
Key Benefits of NFC
NFC provides a range of benefits to consumers and
businesses, such as:
· Intuitive:
NFC interactions require no more than a simple touch
· Versatile:
NFC is ideally suited to the broadest range of industries, environments, and
uses
· Open
and standards-based: The underlying layers of NFC technology follow
universally implemented ISO, ECMA, and ETSI standards
· Technology-enabling:
NFC facilitates fast and simple setup of wireless technologies, such as
Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, etc.)
· Inherently
secure: NFC transmissions are short range (from a touch
to a few centimeters)
· Interoperable:
NFC works with existing contactless card technologies
· Security-ready:
NFC has built-in capabilities to support secure applications
Here are the ways that NFC could have the most
impact.
· Contactless Payment
o mobile
phone is used as a credit/debit card to pay while shopping, dining etc.
· Transportation
o NFC
could easily be integrated into the public transit payment systems in cities
that already use a smart card swipe
· Health
Care
o Not
only can NFC tags provide medical professionals with information about what
treatments a patient should receive, but they can also keep track of when
nurses and doctors have checked in with that patient and when
· Smart poster
o Touch
the phone to the NFC tag on the poster and download details about the film,
including where and when it'll be playing and the URL for a Web site to visit
to order e-tickets
